Abstract

This study aims to examine the historical development of volleyball, from its invention by William G. Morgan in 1895 to its becoming one of the most popular sports in the world, including in Indonesia. The method used is a literature study by collecting and analyzing data from various historical sources, books, and scientific articles. The results of the study show that volleyball was originally created as a lighter alternative to basketball, then underwent significant rule evolution, spread to various countries through World War II, and finally became an Olympic sport in 1964. In Indonesia, this sport began to be known during the Dutch colonial period and continued to develop until it formed an official organization such as PBVSI. The conclusion of this study confirms that volleyball has transformed from a mere recreational game into a competitive sport with a strong organizational structure and has a broad social impact.
